OARS
The OARS framework is a key component of Motivational Interviewing (MI), aimed at fostering motivation for change. It includes:
1. Open-ended questions: Promote client expression without leading to specific answers, facilitating exploration of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. 2. Affirmations: Recognise and affirm clients’ strengths and efforts to build confidence and self-efficacy with genuine, specific positive feedback. 3. Reflections: Mirror or paraphrase what the client says to demonstrate understanding and encourage deeper insight into the client’s motivations and feelings. 4. Summaries: Recap key points discussed, highlighting progress and preparing the client for next steps, reinforcing understanding and facilitating transition.
OARS facilitates effective communication, empathy, and client engagement in MI, supporting individuals in their change journey
